Some started in business as the administrator for her husband’s store, Somes Uniforms, then located on Route 17 in Paramus. In fact, that’s how she met Jerry Some, and they later married.
But at some point Diane decided she didn’t want to work for other people and would prefer her own business.
She talked to Jerry about it, and he thought it was a good idea, encouraging and supporting her. Although they both sold uniforms, Uniform Fashions would be different than Somes, which caters to services like police and fire.
Diane’s business would focus on other people who wear uniforms to work: nurses, food service workers and wait staff, hairdressers, housekeeping staff, special groups.
Starting out in separate locations, eventually they moved together to Hackensack and operated side-by-side. Jerry passed away about 2-½ years ago, and now his grandchildren run his store.
Diane sells everything from shoes and socks to hats, and everything that goes in between.
Some of her biggest customers are institutions like Holy Name Medical Center, which outfitted its entire staff with clothing from Diane.
She also sells to community colleges, including the Community College of Morris, which purchased apparel for students in its hotel and restaurant division.
Her customers are also individuals "just looking for comfortable work apparel," -- and Some has a full sales staff on the floor to give advice on fabrics, color, style and fit.
Most of the staff, she said, wear scrubs two to three times per week. That helps customers see how the garments look and wear.
In addition to running a thriving business, Some is president of the Hackensack Chamber of Commerce and active with many Hackensack civic groups, especially the Main Street Alliance and the Stigma-Free Committee to raise awareness of mental illness.
